Biography

  • Jabez Smith was born on 29 Nov 1705, in Milford, Connecticut.1
  • He married Ruth Seymour, daughter of Matthew Seymour and Sarah Hayes, on Sunday, 12 Jun 1729 in Ridgefield, Connecticut.1
  • Jabez and Ruth lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

  • 1 Nov 1780 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, Jabez married Hannah Bennett Mead (also written Benedict.)1,2,3
  • Jabez Smith died on 22 Sep 1781 in Ridgefield, Connecticut, at age 75 date of 1787.1
  • The deaths of Jabez and Ruth are documented in Ridgefield, CT historical records yet their grave stones cannot be found.

An explanation for why Jabez's grave is not found in the Ridgefield Titicus may be in Charles Rockwell's "History of Ridgefield, CT". In there he states that in about 1850, some of the older grave stones were removed in order to create an additional roadway in the area of the cemetery. These grave stones were not replaced. It's possible that Jabez and his wife's headstones were among those removed in 1850.3
  • He left a will. Which is in Probate Records Danbury, Connecticut Vol V p351.
