Biography:
  • Thomas Welles was born c 1590, in Stourton, Whichford, Warwickshire, England.1,2,3
  • In July 1615, just before his marriage, his father and older brother gave him a house and lands in Burmington, Warwickshire, England. He owned one share in the Piscataqua patent of lands in what is now Dover, Durham, Stratham and parts of Newington and Greenland NH.
  • He married Alice Tomes, daughter of John Tomes and Ellen Gunne, on Sunday, 5 Jul 1615 in Long Marston, Gloucestershire, England.4
  • They arrived in New England between 20 Aug 1635 and 5 April 1636 with his wife and 6 children.They were in Boston 9 Jun 1636, and in Hartford in 1637. Another account has them sailing on the "Susan and Ellen", arriving at Saybrook in 1636.
  • Thomas and Alice immigrated in 1636 to Hartford, Connecticut, Thomas and Alices arrived at Saybrook in 1636 wth their family. They moved to Hartford on what is now Governor Street.
  • Thomas Welles was a planter.2
  • In 1637 he was chosen magistrate of Conn. He held that office until he died. He had many offices: Treasurer 1639-41, 1648-52. Secretary 1640-48. Alternate commissioner of the United Colonies 1648. Commissioner of the United Colonies in Boston 1649. Commissioner 1654, 1659. Elected moderator of the General Court 1654. Deputy Governor 1654, 1656-57, 1659. Governor 1655, 1658. The meeting of the commissioners of the United Colonies in 1648 was the first federal congress of the New World. Chief subject: the duty imposed by Conn on all grain, biscuit and beaver exported from mouth of the Conn River for the support of the Fort at Saybrook. All colonies agreed except Mass Bay Colony. Another subjhect: a dark plot against Uncas and the English by the Narragansetts and Nehantics. Uncas, though appearing before the commissioners with a deep stab inflicted by an Indian, was fined 100 fathoms of wampum for too tender dalliance with the Pequot Squaws. He moved to Wethersfield 1646 about the time of his second marriage. The Conn state prison is on land once owned by him. In addition to his constant attention to public service he seems to have been interested in improving the Indians. He died very suddenly, being well at supper and dead before midnight. Inventory of his estate 1069 pounds 8s.2d. Contained an item: Books English and Latine.
  • He married Elizabeth Deming c 1646.
  • Thomas was the Governor of Connecticut in 1655 and also in 1658.2
  • Thomas Welles died on 14 Jan 1659/60 in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • He died very suddenly, being well at supper and dead before midnight.
  • Inventory of his estate was taken. 1069 £ 8s.2d. Contained an item: Books English and Latine.
