    Obituary Notice
Published in the Hartford Courant from 7/15/2007 - 7/16/2007.

    David Collier Sargent
SARGENT, David Collier David Collier Sargent, loving husband of Jean Thomson Sargent, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday (July 7, 2007). He was born on December 1, 1915, in Greenwich and lived his entire life in this State. His Father, John Sargent and Mother, Anne Hoyt Sargent, were both residents of Greenwich for most of their lives. He attended Phillips Andover Academy, graduating in 1934, and Yale University in 1938. After graduation, he worked in Hartford at the Travelers Insurance Company for his entire career as an underwriter and became an officer of the company. He enlisted two days after Pearl Harbor in the Army and served as a Captain in the Corps of Engineers (Sixth Armored Division) in the European Theater until the end of the War. During the Battle of the Bulge, he became engaged by letter to Jean Thomson, his wife of 62 years. They were married two weeks after the end of the War, and lived in Hartford until 1989. He is survived by Jean, his three children all of whom grew up in Hartford, John H. Sargent and his wife Linda, David T. Sargent and his wife Barbara, and Anne S. Lewchik and her husband Mark; and five grandchildren, Caitlin, Jake, Sarah, Eric, and Lindsay. An avid naturalist, he was a supporter of the Nature Conservancy, helping to preserve a number of areas and endangered species along the shore, particularly his favored piping plovers and ospreys. He served on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations including the Noah Webster House and the Hartford Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center. After retirement, Jean and Dave moved to South Lyme, eventually moving to Essex Meadows for the remainder of his life. While at Essex Meadows he was a founding member of the Board of the Essex Meadows Foundation Scholarship Fund, which has helped many of the people working there to pursue their higher educational dreams. Most of all, he will be remembered as the Poet of Essex Meadows, placing a poem every month, written in rhyme and iambic pentameter, in the Meadowwords newsletter. A private service for the immediate family has been held and therefore there are no calling hours or reception. To best honor David, please send contributions to the Essex Meadows Foundation Scholarship Fund or the Nature Conservancy in Connecticut, 55 High St., Middletown, Connecticut 06457. He lived his life with grace, humility, respect, and good humor. He will be greatly missed.

    Obituary

    Lawton Griswold Sargent Jr.

SARGENT, LAWTON GRISWOLD, JR. Lawton Griswold Sargent, Jr., 88, of North Branford, died peacefully on February 2, 2012 due to congestive heart failure. He was predeceased on June 27, 2011 by the love of his life, Audrey, his wife of sixty-two years. Lawt was the grandson of Joseph Bradford Sargent, founder of Sargent & Company and three times Mayor of New Haven. He is survived by his sons Geofrey of North Branford, Peter of Newton, MA (wife Barbara and grandchildren Lauren and Christine), and daughter Cindy Chase of Hamden (husband Tyler and grandsons Spencer and Corey). Lawt attended Phillips Andover Academy ('42) and was a proud member of Yale '45W graduating in 1949. College was interrupted by World War II. He was a fighter pilot First Lieutenant with the 8th Air Force, 356th Fighter Group. His joy of flying continued in recent years thanks to Microsoft Flight Simulator where he could travel worldwide. A successful businessman, Lawt was President and CEO of Insurance Management Inc., of New Haven, retiring in 1988. Lawt was very active in the New Haven community. His positions included: President, Quinnipiac Council, Boy Scouts of America; President, New Haven Association of Independent Insurance Agents; Campaign Chairman, United Way of Greater New Haven; President, Quinnipiack Club; President, Kiwanis Club of New Haven, President, New Haven Lawn Club; and Director, First Federal Savings and Loan Association of New Haven. Besides family, above all Lawt and Auddie treasured their twenty-seven years of half-year residence on Nantucket Island in their home 'Ponemah' surrounded by children and grandchildren as much as possible. Lawt deservedly wore the moniker of the "Mayor of Wanoma Way" from his perch on the deck. He will be sorely missed by many friends. Gegi and Da together again. Rest in peace. We love you. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 25th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at the New Haven Lawn Club, 193 Whitney Ave., New Haven, CT 06511. In lieu of flowers donations should be sent to the Employee Appreciation Committee, c/o Pat Eldredge, at Evergreen Woods, 88 Notch Hill Rd., North Branford, CT 06471.
