Biography

  • Robert Kitchell was born in 1604, in England.
  • Robert was from Rolvenden, Kent county, England. He had lived in Cranbrook, Kent county, for a while.
  • He immigrated to America arriving in 1632 in Connecticut.
  • He married Margaret Sheaffe, daughter of Edmund Sheaffe and Joan Jordan, on Friday, 9 Jan 1631/32.
  • He was the first signer of the famous "Plantation Covenant" of Guilford, CT in 1639. He lived in Guilford 27 years, and was one of the most active and prominent of the planters, a man of education and means. He was 5 times deputy to the General Court at New Haven and for many years was treasurer of the plantation.
  • In 1666 he moved to Newark NJ. His house was on Mulberry St. between Center and Market. (He was regarded as an old man when he moved to NJ - he was 62 and his wife was 64.)
  • Robert Kitchell died in 1672 in Newark, New Jersey.

  • Margaret Sheaffe was born in 1602.
  • She married Robert Kitchell on Friday, 9 Jan 1631/32.
  • Her husband Robert died in 1672 in Newark, New Jersey, leaving her a widow.
  • After her husband Robert's death Margaaret went to Greenwich to live with her daughter Johanna and son-in-law Rev. Jeremiah Peck.
  • Margaret Sheaffe died on 26 Apr 1682 in Greenwich, Connecticut.
