Daniel Youngs

ID #4586, (1748-1809)

Family: Susannah Kelsey b. 1752, d. 22 Sep 1847

Biography

  • Daniel Youngs was born on 20 Jan 1748, in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York.1
  • He married Susannah Kelsey, daughter of Timothy Kelsey and Keziah Ketchum, on Sunday, 29 Oct 1769.
  • Daniel Youngs was called Captain.
  • Daniel was brought up by his uncle Thomas Youngs and at his death inherited the "Old Homestead" and farm at Cove Neck. It is related that he was a terror to the Hessian soldiers (who were stationed at Oyster Bay during the Revolution) after their first attempt to steal juice from his cider press. He was a Captain of the militia before the Revolution and in 1776 signed to support Congress, but after the Battle of Long Island and the British were in possession he, like others who did not enter the Continental Army or flee the Island, was compelled to take the oath of allegiance and act under British orders. On 23 April 1790, when on his tour through Long Island, Washington stopped at his home overnight and made this entry of it in his diary "proceeding to Oyster Bay, to the house of Capt. Daniel Young, at the cove, private and very neat and decent, where we lodged." His daughter Kezia, then a blooming girl of 17 years, was favored with a hearty kiss from the General on his departure. Susannah survived Daniel 40 years and often told how she entertained "The Father of His Country."
  • He died on 20 Nov 1809 in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, at age 61.
  • He was buried at the Youngs Cemetery in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York.1
