John Townsend

Biography

  • John Townsend was born s 1611, in Norwich, Norfolk County, England.2
  • He married Elizabeth Cole, daughter of Robert Cole, c 1635.3
  • John Townsend arrived in America some years before 1645.
  • In 1645 he lived in Flushing NY along with his 2 brothers Henry and Richard. The 3 brothers were Quakers and were soon "at variance" with the Dutch authorities. John and Henry were arrested and fined for "countenancing Quakers".
  • The 3 brothers moved to Warwick RI. All 3 were members of the Provincial Assembly. In 1656 they tried to settle again in Flushing, but sometime before 1661 moved and settled at Oyster Bay. (Possibly the children before George were born not at Oyster Bay).

  • He married Mary Tucker, daughter of John Tucker, s 1659.1
  • Simon lived in Newport, Rhode Island.
  • He was a Physician from Newport.
  • Simon moved to Monmouth County, New Jersey, In 1665 Simon bought 2 shares of land in Monmouth County, NJ.
  • Simon was admitted freeman on 2 May 1666.
  • 1677 at a town meeting Simon Cooper appears as a freeholder having 400 acres of land at Cove Neck. His homestead is said to have been about the old Steamboat dock and to west of Ship Point. Dr. Robert Cooper lived opposite Edward Townsend and his widow had a piece of land on the north side of the road known as Mercy Cooper's Garden and where now stands (1899) the original cottage built by II Simon 1736 (a deed) (from I Simon) to brother Joseph Cooper 20 acres on Cove Neck adjoining the harbor and about 8 feet from a certain spring which is Joseph's dwelling house 1714. Robert Cooper on account of love and good will convoy the land to (James Russell) at Oyster Bay Cove 1751. "Joseph Cooper to Thomas and Daniel Youngs 50 acres near head of Cove Neck" For other records see Record Book of SE Townsend.
  • Simon moved to Shrewsbury, New Jersey, In 1679 he received a warrant for 330 acres. This land was at Ramsants Point, Shrewsbury. (2005 - on map there is a Rumson Neck right next to Shrewsbury NJ.)
  • In 1681 he purchased land at Oyster Bay, LI. He was a man of prominence in the early days of the town's development. At the time of his death he owned 400 acres at Coopers Bluff (then Cove Neck Point) and swamp land.
  • In 1686 Simon Cooper, with Henry Townsend, Richard Harcutt, Nathaniel Coles and Job Wright ...over town meetings, etc.
  • He died b 1691 in Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York.
  • 1699 town records mention Robert and Mercy Cooper, also Simon and Martha Cooper sons and their wives of Simon Cooper deceased and Mary Cooper.
