Family 2: Mary Denny b. 22 Apr 1727, d. 8 Aug 1822

Biography

  • Nathan Sargent was born on 27 Aug 1718, in Malden, Massachusetts.
  • He moved from Malden to Leicester about 1741 with his cousin and future brother-in-law Joseph Sargent . Leicester had been settled in the early part of the 18th century largely by people from Malden, MA.1
  • Nathan bought 100 acres for a farm on Chestnut Hil spending £200 on the purchase. The land was in the eastern part of Leicester on the Worcester edge of town. Joseph's 40 acres joined Nathan's on the west.1
  • In an article by C. C. Denny in 1893 'An Ancient Road, and Reminiscences of Some Families who Dwelt on It' George Washington passed on the road, a post road, on 1 July 1775, on his way to Cambridge to take command of the army and again as President on 22 Oct. 1789. Tradition says that he rested under the shade of a large sycamore tree opposite the Nathan Sargent house. The house was pulled down in 1908.1
  • He married Mary Sargent, daughter of Joseph Sargent and Hannah Bucknam, on Sunday, 24 Jun 1742 in Leicester, Massachusetts, Nathan and Mary are first cousins once removed.2
  • His wife Mary died on 28 May 1750 in Leicester, Massachusetts, at age 28 leaving him a widower.3
  • Nathan Sargent married Mary Denny, daughter of Daniel Denny and Rebecca Jones, on Friday, 12 Feb 1750/51 in Leicester, Massachusetts.2
  • His son Samuel in 1775 was a member of Captain Seth Washburn's company of minutemen. On the 19th of April the alarm reached Leicester of the advance of the British troops toward Concord. The company on their march to oppose them halted at Nathan Sargent's house. His wife, finding the members deficient in ammunition, hastily took the leaden weights from the clock, melted them into bullets, and distributed them among the men.4
  • Nathan Sargent died on 15 Jun 1799 at age 80.
