Griffith Bowen

ID #819, (1602-1676)

Family: Margaret Fleming b. c 1600, d. b 1676

Biography

  • Griffith Bowen was born in 1602, in Oxwich, Gower, Wales.1
  • He married Margaret Fleming, daughter of Henry Fleming and Alice Dawkin, in 1627 in Wales.1,2
  • He arrived in Boston 1638, admitted to First Church in Boston 6 Dec 1638, along with his wife. He was granted land at Muddy River (now Brookline).
  • In 1643 he had a house in Boston on what is now the East side of Washington Street from Bedford to Essex Street. Here within the house yard stood the 'Liberty Tree' which was said to have been planted in 1646 and became famous in the Stamp Act times, cut down by the Tories in 1774. (The tree made 14 cords of wood).
  • Griffith must have sailed for England after 1649 with his wife and several children. Many court records indicate 'his lack of business foresight, his ill-luck, perhaps; his monetary difficulties; his imprisonment; his quarrel with his eldest son about his estate.
  • On 30 May 1654 he bought a house and land in the parish of St. Maries in the County of Pimbroke England. He seemed to have been singularly unfortunate in his business affairs, probably owning only a little property in Great Britain when he died.
  • Griffith Bowen died in 1676 in London, England.1
  • No record was found of administration of his British estate. His New England estate, all real estate, was valued at £535.
