  • William Henry Scovill was born on 27 Jul 1796, in Waterbury, Connecticut.
  • He graduated from Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Connecticut, Cheshire Academy was established in 1794 by Samuel Seabury, an Episcopalian Bishop.1
  • At Age 17 he was a clerk for Mr. Peck in New Hampshire, who then established him in business in Waterbury. Later in business at Turner's Crossroads, North Carolina. In 1827 he purchased half interest in the firm of Leavenworth, Hayden and Scovill, then the name was changed to J.M.Leavenworth and W.H.Scovill.
  • He married Eunice Ruth Davies, daughter of Thomas John Davies and Ruth Foote, on Monday, 2 Jul 1827.
  • William and Eunice lived in Waterbury, Connecticut.
  • William Henry Scovill was a businessman.
  • He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
  • The year 1839 was fateful: William was in his 43rd year, Eunice turned 32, Alathea 11, Mary Ann 8, Thomas 6 and Sarah 4. In May Thomas died, then on the 8th of Nov Sarah died, and the 25 Eunice died. There must have been a sickness.
  • He married Rebecca Hopkins Smith s 1840.1
  • William Henry Scovill died on 27 Mar 1854 in Charleston, South Carolina, at age 57.
Scoville Manufacturing: [It was] not until the 1890s that typed letters became more the norm than the exception in the company." (JoAnne Yates, Control through Communication, 1989, p. 131.) The workforce of the Scoville Manufacturing Co., which made brass products, increased from 314 in 1874 to 1,157 in 1892. Yates reports that "In 1888 the first typewritten letters appeared in Scovill's press books, interspersed with the still more common handwritten ones....By 1889 Scovill had hired a female typist." (p. 168.)2

  • Thomas John Davies was born in Nov 1767, in Washington, Connecticut, at Davies Hollow.
  • Thomas received a rather better education from his grandfather.
  • He married Ruth Foote, daughter of John Foote and Mary Peck, s 1794.1
  • Thomas and Ruth lived in Washington, Connecticut, They made a home in Davies Hollow.
  • Thomas John Davies was a devoted member of St John's Episcopal church - in 1796 he was elected to office of chorister.
  • 1798 he lost his money and moved to NY. He bought 600 acres of land on the shores of Black Lake, about 9 miles from Ogdensburg. In 1800 he brought his family and by 1801 they were living in their house. He was made sheriff of St Lawrence County for 10 years, and was also a county judge. He was respected by all as a benevolent and public-spirited citizen.
  • In 1801 Thomas and Ruth moved to Ogdensburg, New York.
  • Thomas John Davies died on 18 Apr 1845 in Black Lake, St Lawrence County, New York, at age 77.
