  • Hannah Eudora Salisbury died on 30 Sep 1971 in Meshoppen, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, at age 99.1
  • She was buried at the West Hill Cemetery in Shunk, Pennsylvania.4
  • An obituary was published in the Canton Independent Sentinel, SALISBURY –MRS STANLEY (HANNAH EUDORA SALISBURY) GILBERT, formerly of Canton died September 30, 1971 at the home of her grandniece, Mrs. Grace Vaow in Meshoppen, six weeks to the day after her 99th birthday. Death came from the frailties of advanced age. Services were held no Sunday, October 33 at the Kleese Funeral Home in Canton, with burial beside her previous husband, James Brenchley in the West Hill Cemetery, Shunk for which her grandfather Shadduck had given the land. Mrs. Gilbert was born on a farm in Fox Township, Sullivan County, Aug. 19, 1872 the third child of Elon Galusha and Vicilla Chloe (Shaddock) Salisbury and most of her long life was spent in Sullivan and Bradford Counties. On both sides she was descended from early colonist of Massachusetts. Four of her ancestors came over in the Mayflower and seven took part in the American Revolution. These included Dr. John Wilcox, only known Revolutionary soldier buried in Fox Township and Mara (Mary) Sargeant Grace, the “Mollie Pitcher of Bunker Hill,” and William Salisbury, one of the “Indians” at the Boston Tea Party and a soldier with General Montgomery and Arnold in the attempted invasion of Canada, both of whom are buried in the Leona Cemetery. As a girl of fourteen, Mrs. Gilbert became one of the charter members of the Shunk Seventh-day Adventist Church, the denomination of which she was a devoted member all her long life. She often played the piano or organ for church services and for many years taught piano to children where she lived. She was also an active member of the Etude Music Club of LeRoy during her years there. Though married three times, Mrs. Gilbert had no children of her own, but she was a second mother to her grandnieces, Grace King, (Mrs. Francis Vaow) and Judith Straus (Mrs. Alfred DiCenso) who lived with her for extensive periods during their childhood and girlhood. Other young relatives stayed with her for shorter periods. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her brother, Elon Galusha Sallisbury IV of Takoma Park, Maryland by sixteen nephews and nieces, and by grandnieces and nephews even to the fourth and fifth generations. She also has two step-daughters; Mrs. Emerson Havens, Troy and Mrs. Clifton Rundell, Seneca Falls, N.Y. None ever exemplified the “Good Neighbor” better than did Mrs. Gilbert. She was always the one called on by family and community in times of emergency and one called on her help in vain. She was also the member of the family who over the later years kept in touch with its far-scattered members and was the link between them and the past. She was known affectionately as “Aunt Dora” by many besides her host of blood relations and their families. Her memory will be cherished widely with affection and esteem. –Canton Independent Sentinel.1
