Jane Garndner Collier Lewis 1807-1861
Possibly 1830, age 23

Family: Curtis Lewis b. 11 Jul 1800, d. 19 Jun 1882

Biography

  • Jane Gardner Collier was born on 3 Nov 1807, in Savannah, Georgia.
  • She married Curtis Lewis, son of James Booth Lewis and Mary Beardsley, on Sunday, 12 Mar 1826 in Greensboro, Georgia.1
  • "My mother's marriage was romantic" (as written in a letter from Chloe Emma to her nehew Edward R Sargent in 1912). Jane was very attractive and had many suitors. Curtis was not in favor with Jane's mother (Chloe) because he was poor. As a dutiful daughter Jane tried to love the man her mother liked. However, Curtis was handsome and determined to win her, which he did and that is why the liscence was safe in his pocket some days before the marriage. It was some time before her mother forgave and forgot, but she ended up liking Curtis very much.2
  • Curtis Lewis and Jane appeared on the 1860 US Federal Census of Griffin, Spalding County, Georgia, enumerated 9 Jun 1860, reporting a personal estate for Jane of $2,000.3
  • She died on 24 Oct 1861 in Griffin, Georgia, at age 53.
