William Bassett

Biography:
  • William Bassett was born c 1590.1
  • William Bassett was of Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England.
  • William Bassett was of Sandwich, England.1
  • He moved to Leiden, the Netherlands, with other Seperatists, where he spent 10 years.1
  • He was married already two times by the time he sailed to New England.
  • He immigrated on the ship 'Fortune' arriving in Nov 1621 at Plymouth, Massachusetts.1
  • He married Mrs Elizabeth (Unknown) Bassett in 1622.2
  • William Bassett was a blacksmith and armourer.
  • William married Mary Tilden Lapham, daughter of Nathaniel Tilden and widow of Thomas Lapham.3
  • In 1638 William moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts, with their family.4
  • In Duxbury for several years he and Miles Standish were alternately deputies of the town to the General Court. He was a man of property, rated one of the highest on the tax list. One of the original 54 proprietors of the plantation granted to the town of Duxbury (Bridgewater). Each settler had a grant of a house lot of 6 acres. Incorporated as Bridgewater in 1656. He became a large land holder and is said to have had the largest library owned by any of the Pilgrims. Blacksmith and 'armourer'. Volunteer in the war against the Pequots in 1637. He was a member of Captain Miles Standish's Military Company in 1643. Inventory of his estate: 'a pair of bellowes, an Anvill, a vice, tong and hammers and coal shovels, a featherbed and bolster and sheets, one other small feather bed, 2 pillows, 2 blankets, 4 guns, 1 buggy; and several books among them being Wilson's Divonary', 2 concordances and many commentaries on books of the bible.

    In a scholarly work, called "from Bridgewater and Plymouth."
  • He died in 1667 in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
  • Inventory of his estate was taken in 1668. Inventory of his estate: 'a pair of bellowes, an Anvill, a vice, tong and hammers and coal shovels, a featherbed and bolster and sheets, one other small feather bed, 2 pillows, 2 blankets, 4 guns, 1 buggy; and several books among them being Wilson's Divonary', 2 concordances and many commentaries on books of the bible.

  • He was in a scholarly work, called "from Bridgewater and Plymouth."
