  • John Alva Stephens and Jennie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of K Precinct, Seward County, Nebraska, enumerated 14 Jun 1900, They own their home with a mortgage.6
  • Jennie and John worked hard and endured many hardships and trials, such as rattlesnakes, severe storms, and Indians. One day while Jennie was home alone with a severe headache, she heard a noise at the door and saw the muzzle of a gun being pushed through the opening by a large Native American who said, "We want flour- we no hurt pale face." She gave the man and his squaw flour and the couple rode away. Another time when she was home alone, Jennie noticed a prairie fire had broken out south of their farm. She became frightened and loaded some belongings and the children into the wagon in case the fire hit their place. The fire was checked in time and no harm was done.4
  • She died on 22 Jun 1922 in Seward, Nebraska, at age 68.4
  • She was buried at the Seward Cemetery in Seward, Nebraska, Plot: Plat A, Row 2 Lot 140 East.4

  • In 23 Mar 1871 John moved to Nebraska with his parents. They lived in a dugout and sod house.2
  • During their first summer in Nebraska John's father was killed by lightening while hauling lumber from Nebraska City for their new house. In the fall of 1871, John bought the southeast 80 of section 24 in K precinct and built a sod house. He worked hard, going barefooted to save on shoe leather.2
  • He married Jennie Ellsworth, daughter of Ebenezer Wickes Ellsworth and Susan Balch, on Tuesday, 1 Dec 1874 in Union County, Iowa.1,3
  • John Alva Stephens was a farmer.4
  • 1878 John & Jennie built a frame house.2
  • John Alva Stephens and Jennie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Precinct K, Seward County, Nebraska, enumerated 4 Jun 1880, Also living in the household was Elijah Wallack, age 17 laborer.4
