  • Francis enlisted a third time May 7 1864 Co B 48th Iowa Infantry.
    Promoted Corporal.
    Mustered out Oct. 21, 1864, Rock Island, IL at expiration term of service.
    The 48th Iowa Infantry was tasked with guarding rebel prisoners at Rock Island, Illinois.2
  • He was a lawyer, practicing law in Spokane, and a prosecuting attorney in Whitman county.3,4
  • He married Emmaline Smith on Thursday, 23 Feb 1871 in Seward, Nebraska.1

    Pioneer Lawyer Came West 50 Years Ago – Civil War Veteran.

    Francis M. Ellsworth, 78, pioneer of the Spokane country, who came west in 1874, died yesterday noon at his home, N1607 Madison street. He served as prosecuting attorney in Whitman county soon after coming west and had practiced law in Spokane. He was a Civil war veteran and was a member of Reno post of the G.A.R. Surviving him are two sons, J.B. of Spokane and Frank of Tolson, Mont., and three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Barton of Spokane, Mrs. Susie Beebe of Seattle and Miss Carrie Ellsworth at home; also 12 grandchildren. The body is at Hazen & Jaeger's awaiting funeral arrangements.
