Biography

  • George Beldin Sears was born on 25 Jun 1809, in Ridgefield, Connecticut.3
  • Father: James Sears (b 10 Nov 1788 Ridgefield CT) - Mother: Deborah Crosby (b 11 Oct 1790 Southeast NY.)3
  • He married Marinda Rockwell, daughter of Zeri Rockwell and Lydia Weed, on Tuesday, 15 Sep 1829.2
  • After his wife died George married Mary Jane Northrup on 28 Mar 1832 and had at least two children.3
  • George was an educator; he was educated in the local district school except for two terms, in which he attended a select school for the study of Latin and the higher mathematics. At the age of fifteen he taught school during the winter, working upon his father's farm summers, but devoting all his spare time to study. About 1837-38 he removed to Hopewell, NY, and was that year appointed instructor in Genesee Wesleyan School, Lima, NY. In March, 1850, he removed to Newark, NJ, to take a position in Newark Wesleyan Academy (now Newark Academy.) In Jan, 1855, he was elected Vice-Principal of the High School there, and in 1859 Superintendent of the Public Schools, and in 1860 Secretary of Board of Education, continuing in these offices till Sep 1877, "having been, during eighteen years, as honest, faithful and devoted a servant as ever served the city of Newark." He resigned these positions on account of ill-health.3

    NORTH ADAMS, Mass — Richard Henry Howland Sr., 74, of Ashland Street, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, at the Williamstown Commons.

    He was born in Brandon, Vt., on Dec. 15, 1932, a son of the late Wendall Howland and Elizabeth (Gravel) Howland. He attended schools in Brandon. He was employed for many years at the General Cable Co. in North Adams and Williamstown. After his retirement he owned and operated a lawn care business. He loved bowling and fishing and helping people.

    Survivors include three daughters: Debra Langenback of Stamford, Vt., Robin Howland of Williamstown and Laurie Burdick of Florida, Mass.; a son, Richard Howland Jr. of Clarksburg; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucretia Foley of Brushton, N.Y.

    He was predeceased by two brothers: Robert Howland, his twin, and John Howland Sr.

    At Mr. Howland's request there are no funeral services or calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for the American Diabetes Association through the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA
