    About Our Chapter

    Sgt. Caleb Hopkins Chapter was named for this soldier of the Revolutionary War as a tribute to Mrs. James Abels, the former Luta Hopkins. Mrs. Abels, a descendant of Caleb Hopkins, was Regent of the Springfield DAR Chapter from 1943-1945 and served as sponsor and advisor for this new chapter.

    Caleb Hopkins and Thankful Paine were married in 1766 and lived in Eastham, Massachusetts. They had eight sons and one daughter. Sgt. Hopkins served in 1776 in Truro and again in 1778 at Winter Hill. Thankful died in 1816 at 70 years of age; Caleb died in 1836 at 93 years of age. Sgt. Hopkins, as well as many Springfield residents, was a descendant of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower.

    Betty L. Alborg, 87, of Springfield died Jan. 23, 2008, at St. John's Hospital. Betty was born in Springfield on May 28, 1920, the daughter of Edward J. and Rhea Hopkins Maisenbacher. She married James L. Alborg on July 7, 1944.
    She was preceded in death by two sons, Thomas M. Alborg
    and James D. Alborg, both in 1988. She also was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
    She was a veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.
    She retired from Franklin Life Insurance Co., where she was vice president of new business/policy issue.
    She is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Ann (and husband, Jim) Keys of Rochester and Salli (and husband, John) Chernis of Sherman; sons, Don Alborg of Springfield and Bill Alborg of Mission, TX; sister, Shirley (and husband, Dan) Gunter of Canyon Lake, TX; brothers, Edward Maisenbacher of Springfield and Ralph (and wife, Ruby) Maisenbacher of California; five grandchildren, Cori Charlson, Katie, Kassie and T.J. Keys and Scott and Eric Alborg; and several nieces and nephews.
    The family is being served by Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel where friends may call Jan. 26, 2008, with the Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating. Interment will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard.
    Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

    William (Bill) R. Alborg, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Springfield, died Friday, December 14, 2012, at his home after a two year battle with cancer.

    Bill was born in Olean, New York on July 30, 1947, the son of James L. Alborg and Betty L. (Maisenbacher) Alborg. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and Thomas Alborg.

    He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He retired from Boiler Maker Union 154 in Pittsburg, PA. Bill loved his family, friends, dog and the Pittsburg Steelers.

    He is survived by two sons, one brother, two sisters, four grandchildren, three nieces, one nephew, and his faithful dog, Mudflap.

    Cremation with private family services at a later date. Burial will be at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL.

    Edward J. Maisenbacher, Jr., 88, of Springfield, passed away at 6:43 a.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village.

    Edward was born March 8, 1923 in Springfield, the son of Edward James and Rhea M. Hopkins Maisenbacher. He married Mary Ellen McCroy on August 29, 1942 in Strabane, Northern Ireland; she preceded in him death.

    Edward was a graduate of Springfield High School and worked as an operating engineer for 35 years at Franklin Life Insurance Company and the Secretary of State. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Edward loved fishing and hunting. His greatest love in life was his wife and grandchildren.

    He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Jerry Maisenbacher; and four sisters, Eleanor Young, Dorothy Kincaid, Mildred Bradley and Betty Alborg.

    He is survived by one son, Jim Maisenbacher of Springfield; one daughter, Betty (companion, Greg Stutler) Shuster of Springfield; companion, Peggy Kelly; daughter-in-law, Becki Roth; six grandchildren, Scott Schuster of Springfield, Jamie Maisenbacher of Bloomington, Lindsay (husband, Jason) Hester of Hawaii, Jill Maisenbacher of Springfield, Sean Maisenbacher of Springfield and Patrick Maisenbacher of Florida; four great-grandchildren, Riley, Molly and Grayson Hester and Casey Fox; one sister, Shirley (husband, Dan) Gunter of Texas; one brother, Ralph (wife, Ruby) Maisenbacher of California; and several nieces and nephews.

    Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St.

    Funeral Ceremony: 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

    Memorial contributions may be made to: Washington Street Mission, 408 N. 4th St., Springfield, IL 62702 or St. John's Breadline, 430 N. 5th St., Springfield, IL 62702.
