Biography

  • George Miller Burditt was born on 11 Oct 1885, in Cooperstown, New York.1
  • The following notice was in the newspaper:, on 11 Aug 1889.1

    George Burditt saved from drowning

    Snatched From a Watery Grave

George Burditt, the fourteen-year old son of ex-president, W. Dean Burditt of this village, had a narrow escape from drowning on Friday of last week. While at the Presbyterian Sunday school picnic held at Three-Mile Point that day, he was paddling about in a small canoe just off the steamboat dock. In some manner the canoe overturned and the young Burditt, who could not swim, found himself sinking in deep water. Harry Lewis, son of Edwin Lewis of Bowerstown, happened to be on the dock at the time, and quickly throwing off a part of his clothing, rushed to the rescue of his friend. The drowning boy was reached just in time, and with difficulty help up until a boat was rowed to the spot. Both were taken from the water in an exhausted condition. The action of young Lewis was spoken of by all who saw it as heroic in the extreme, and worthy of the highest praise. Had help arrived a few seconds later than it did, that day would have had a sad ending, and mourning would have filled many hearts that night.

    S. Jane Burditt obituary from The Otsego Farmer

    Miss Burditt Found Dead

Alarmed by the fact that none of her neighbors had seen Miss S. Jane Burditt for 48 hours, W. Dean Burditt, Merton Barnes and others entered her house Wednesday evening at 6:30 o’clock and found her dead in her bed.

Dr. Imogene Bassett was called at once and after examining the body decided that Miss Burditt had probably died early Tuesday morning. Both coal fires were out, the house consequently being cold. The presence of bottles about the room seemed to indicate that she had attempted to relieve her sufferings alone, and but had soon died. Dr. Bassett thinks from an acute attack of congestion of the lungs.

Miss Burditt was last seen by Mr. Barnes Monday afternoon on Maria street at about 4 o’clock. Except for a cold she seemed to be in her usual health. It is surmised that she was taken ill Monday night after retiring and soon feeling ill dressed herself, for she was dressed when found.

Dr. Bassett telephoned Dr. H. A. Ward, coroner at Richfield Springs, telling him of the circumstances and of her diagnosis. As there seemed to be no doubt whatever of the cause of Miss Burditt’s death, he decided that no inquest was necessary.

The funeral will be held this Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the house, the services to be in charge of the Rev. Mr. Conger of the Presbyterian church, of which for many years Miss Burditt had been a member. Interment will be in the Lakewood cemetery.

Miss Burditt was born in 1838 in Cooperstown and had always lived in the house in which she died on south Pioneer Street. She is survived by a brother W. Dean Burditt of this place and by a sister, Mrs. James A. Lynes, who lives on Susquehanna avenue.
