  • Ebenezer Joseph Hanks was born on 11 Feb 1814, in Lakeville, New York.1
  • At age 16 or 17 Ebenezer quarreled with his parents and left home, never returning to live with them.3
  • He married Jane Wells Cooper on Monday, 28 Oct 1839 in Adams, Illinois.1
  • In 1841 Ebenezer and his wife Jane had converted to the LDS church. In 1846 they were sealed in the Nauvoo Temple before leaving on the trek west.3
  • Ebenezer was a 3rd Sergeant in Company E of the Mormon Battalion. The Mormon Battalion was the only religiously based unit in US military history. It was in existence from Jul 1846 to Jul 1847 during the Mexican=American Was or 1846-1848. The battalion was a volunteer unit of between 534 and 559 Latter-day Saints men led by Mormon company officers, commanded by regular U.S. Army officers. During its service, the battalion made a grueling march of nearly 2,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego.

    The battalion’s march and service supported the eventual cession of much of the American Southwest from Mexico to the United States, especially the Gadsden Purchase of 1853 of southern Arizona and New Mexico. The march also opened a southern wagon route to California. Veterans of the battalion played significant roles in America's westward expansion in California, Utah, Arizona and other parts of the West.4,5
  • In 1847 they arrived in Salt Lake City, after traveling to Santa Fe, NM and Pueblo Colorado. Then in the early 1850s they went to San Bernardino, CA. They established themselves in the freighting business hauling supplies between Los angeles and Salt Lake city. Then there was a call home to Utah, when they returned to Parowan.3,6
  • Ebenezer and Jane adopted Martha when her mother Mary Ann Winner died in Parowan.6
  • Ebenezer became a prosperous merchant having stores in Provo, Parowan and Beaver.3
  • Ebenezer Joseph Hanks married Sarah Jane Casper on Sunday, 22 Jan 1860 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Sarah was a plural wife.1,3
  • 11 Feb 1861 Ebenezer was elected mayer of Provo Utah. He missed a few important meetings, and resigned after 5 months in office.3
  • In 1871 Ebenezer and Sarah moved to Iron City, Utah, with their family.3
  • Jane did not move with Ebenezer and Sarah to Iron City.3
  • Ebenezer Joseph Hanks and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Bellevue, Kane County, Utah, enumerated 5 Jun 1880.7
  • Ebenezer was a capitalist merchant when Mormons practiced cooperation. He was a devout Mormon who made significant contributions to early Utah exploration and colonization, the first cotton factory, and iron mining.3
