Daniel Denny

ID #2238, (1694-1760)

Family: Rebecca Jones b. 1701, d. 20 Dec 1740

Biography

  • Daniel Denny was born on 30 Nov 1694, in Coombs, Suffolk, England.
  • Daniel left England June 1715 and arrived in Boston 12 Sep 1715 with Richard Southgate, his friend.
  • In March 1717 they both moved to Leicester, MA and settled on adjoining farms. They were among the earliest settlers of the town. Daniel became very active and influential, and a large land owner.
  • Daniel's sister Deborah lived with him in Leicester from 1717 to 1719 until her marriage.
  • He was a farmer.
  • He married Rebecca Jones, daughter of Nathaniel Jones, in Dec 1722.
  • One of his possessions was a negro boy Richard whom he purchased from his brother Samuel under certain conditions for 5 shillings in Sep 1752 when Richard was 5 years old. Among the conditions was one that the boy should be "improved" and should not be sold except to one of his children. In his will made 10 Apr 1760 he bequeathed Richard to his son Samuel under conditions similar to those under which he was acquired. Richard apparently was a family servant for life.
  • Daniel Denny died on 16 Apr 1760 in Leicester, Massachusetts, at age 65.
George Henry Sargent, brother of Joseph Bradford Sargent, great-great grandson of Daniel Denny, wrote to his sister Sophie Sargent Boggs from London 30 Aug 1899 ..."As for London it is about the most interesting place in the World, especially to Americans of English Descent...we went to Combs to see where Daniel Denny was born and lived till he went to Boston with Sister Deborah. Had a satisfactory visit, and thoroughly inspected 'the old Denny farm' as they call it-including the old, old house, picture of which is in the Denny book. A beautiful country is all around and about, in that Suffolk country, and Daniel and Deborah must have known much homesickness when first they dwelt on that 'stern and rock-bound coast' of dear old hard-pan Massachusetts, and Daniel must have wished that for comfort and serenity of spirit he was in the Lion's den rather than a grubber in a soil so tough and sterile compared with the richness, fertility and tillable ease of the land he left behind him..."
