  • He married Cecelia Lavinia Scott, daughter of William Scott and Elizabeth Celia Jones, on 21 August 1845 in Missouri.1
  • Reuben and Cecelia had 11 children.1
  • He died on 26 July 1896 in Llano County, Texas, at age 64.1
  • From “Llano County, Texas-Family Album-A History

”Reuben Gilmore Stone was religious man, farmer, rancher, pioneer, pilgrim and founder of churches. He was born July 11, 1823 in Alabama. His parents were Rev. John and Elizabeth Stone. Celia Lavinia Scott was born June 22, 1824 in Kentucky to William Scott and Elizabeth Celia Jones a Cherokee Indian.

While in his teens Reuben Stone began preaching in his father’s Friendship Church. In 1845 Celia and Reuben married in Missouri. They migrated to the Walnut Creek-Pecan Creek area of the Texas Hill country. The Friendship Church was reestablished in the Hill country under a brush arbor on Walnut Creek where the church practiced foot washing. On the first Saturday in August, 1855 the Friendship Church was reorganized as the Little Hope Church. Reuben was elected both a deacon and the church clerk.

On January 31, 1855 Reuben received a recorded Preemption Land Grant for having lived on and cultivated their land on West Walnut Creek in Llano County for three years. In January, 1859 the church moved four miles from Walnut Creek to Pecan Creek in Blanco County and changed its name to the Pecan Creek Church. The church moved again in 1861 to the Cedar Creek schoolhouse in Llano County near the old Slator place. In the latter part of 1861 some church members joined the Confederate Army. Others who were against slavery and secession maintained a low profile to avoid arrest for not enlisting in the Confederate Army. In January, 1862 the Pecan Creek Church meetings were suspended due to the outbreak of the Civil War.

The Stones moved to the House Mountain-Hickory Creek area of western Llano County where they ranched the land that is still called the “Stone Pasture.” However, due to increased Indian depredations and the kidnapping at Squaw Creek of the Lehmann children, Willie and Herman, they moved to the Cold Spring Creek area for better protection.

Celia and Reuben raised ten children. These children were: Matilda Jane (Mrs. William Siree Kidd, Sr.) Miles T., Polly Mary Ann (Mrs. Silas Welch), John Henry, Elizabeth “Sinia” E. (Mrs. John Johnson and Mrs. John Bocwes), William “Bill”, Adeline Victoria (Mrs. Simeon Mercer Putman), Caroline Ada (Mrs. John B Yost), Reuben Gilmore, Jr., and Lavinia (Mrs. Ruldolphus Hillman). The Stones had various homesteads around the Hill country, in Blanco, Llano, Gillespie, and Mason counties however they were always very close to their children and took a great deal of interest in them.

On the fourth Sunday in February, 1872 Reuben became the ordained minister and pastor of the Squaw Creek Church in Gillespie Country. Reuben had helped organize this church however he continued to run his ranch called the “Stone Pasture” until he died.

Rev. Reuben Gilmore Stone died July 17, 1896. He was buried in the old section of the Llano City Cemetery. Celia Lavinia Scott Stone died November 30, 1919 at Pontotoc, Texas and was buried next to her husband. (Howard Parsonage.)1

Story

John and Elizabeth Stone

John Stone was born in either South Carolina or Virginia between 1780 and 1790. His wife Elizabeth was born around 1790 in North Carolina or possibly Virginia. They had two sons born in Alabama. One was Ambrose Y. Stone who was born in 1815 and the other was Reuben Gilmore Stone born July 11, 1823. probably they had several other chilren including Sidney and William.

They moved from Alabama to Osage County, Missouri in the late 1830's. In 1840 they moved to Pulaskie County and settled on Bag Maries in a log cabin with twenty foot square interiors, fifteen to eighteen inch faced hand hewn logs and dovetail corners.

In 1844 a Primitive Baptist church was organized in their home. The log cabin then became both home and church. On October 11, 1845 a constitution for their church as drawn up and it was named the Friendship Baptist Church.

Both of their sons, Reuben and Ambrose became Missouri Baptist Association delegates and were very active in the church. Reuben preached regularly in his father’s church while in his teens and was married there to Cecilia Lavinia Scott around the year 1845.

The Stones migrated with their Friendship Baptist Church in a wagon train to eastern Llano County on West Walnut Creek sometime in 1853 where their son the Rev. Reuben Gilmore Stone reestablished the Friendship Church.

The progenitor of most of the American Stone line originated in England. …..The Stone Coat of Arms has been in existence for a great many centuries in England with only a few slight variations of its original design. The first recorded use of the Stone Coat of Arms in America was by Simon and Gregory Stone who settled in Massachusetts in 1635. It has also been used by a number of descendants of other American branches of the Stone family over the centuries. The Rev. John Stone and his wife Elizabeth both died sometime before the outbreak of the Civil War. (Howard Parsonage) contributor
