Jane M Lowther Redmond, 90, of Drum Hill, Peekskill, New York, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Field Hoe, Cortlandt Manor, New York. Born August 13, 1925, in Saugerties, New York, she was the daughter of John and Josephine (Austin) Lowther. She was the wife of the late Peter Redmond and lived in Putnam Valley for many years.
Jane earned her Nursing Degree from St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in New York City, Bachelor of Science in Education, Hunter College; and Master of Arts, Teachers College, Columbia University. A well respected and beloved nurse, teacher and mentor, her students thrived under her guidance. As one former student wrote years later, "Throught my nursing career, you have remained a role model for me. You set the standards that I have strived to maintain."
Jane's nursing and teaching career included instructor, senior instructor, assistant director and associate director at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital; evening charge nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, FL; medical supervisor and clinical instructor at Lenox Hill Hospital and its school of nursing; curriculum coordinator at Westchester School of Nursing Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla, NY (now Westchester Medical Center) and staff nurse in orthopedics at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY, from which she retired.
Well known for her volunteer work as well, over the years she organized and participated in a 12-hour cardiopulmonary resucitation course in the local community; was an American Red Cross nurse for ten years during which she taught home nursing, hospital aide and home health aide courses; assisted in blood pressure clinics throughout Westchester County. As a volunteer with American Cancer Society, she taught in breast self-examination clinics and assisted in Pap clinics, health fairs, etc. She was a member of American Nurses Association, the Hudson Valley Hospital Center Auxiliary and Alumnae Association of the St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing.
A worlwide traveler as well, she travelled extensively in Europe, Africa, Asia and throughout the U.S. including professionally organized nurse/medical groups to China, the Soviet Union and England. As an individual who loved movies, reading and especially politics, Jane will be remembered by friends and family for her intelligence, humor, and immense interest in the world around her. Many thanks to the staff at New York Presbyterian-Hudson Valley Hospital and Field Home for the wonderful care she received.
