FANNING FLORENCE
DeWitt, Mrs. Florence Fanning-wife of the late John W DeWitt, passed away suddenly early Sunday morning, April 11, 1948 at the age of 75. Mrs. DeWitt was born n the Fanning homestead in Wetona and taught until her retirement on pension. She was a member of the Methodist church. She is survived by one brother, Lloyd Fanning, Wetona; a half-brother, Earl Fanning, Rosalyn, Pa; two stepsons, Ray DeWitt of Williamsport and Claude W DeWitt of Troy, several nieces and nephews. The body is at the Soper & Vickery Funeral Home in Troy where services will be held Wednesday at 2 pm. Burial in Wetona Cemetery with Rev. Arthur Morey officiating.
J. FANNING ‘DOC’ CAMPBELL, 87, of 903 West First St., Elmira, died on Wednesday, May 8, 1991, after an extended illness.
Mr. Campbell was born on March 26, 1904, in Wetona, the son of Joseph Bell Fanning Campbell. He was a graduate of Penn State University and was a secondary school teacher in Towanda. Prior to becoming the director of the local office of Production Credit and Farm Loan, he subsequently was the co-proprietor of what was formerly Roy’s Dairy, Horseheads, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the North Presbyterian Church, Elmira. Mr. Campbell was also a charter member of the local Audubon Society and a member of the National Audubon Society. “Doc” as he was most often known was active for many years in the Masonic order. He was a member of Union Lodge No. 108 F&AM of Towanda, where he was master in 1939. He was a member of Royal Arch Chapter No. 161 of Towanda, where he served as high priest in 1942. In 1960, he was master of the Northern Council Royal and Select Master No. 24 of Athens. In 1945, he was commander of the Knights of the Northern Commandery No. 15, Knights Templar of Towanda. In 1960, he was elected a member of the Penn Priery of Harrisburg and was named a Knight of the Cross of Honor, an honorary degree highest in the York Rite of Freemasonry. He was also a Knight and past sovereign of the Knight of the Red Cross of Constantine, a member of the York Cross of Honor Kahurah Shrine of Binghamton and the Elmira Shrine Club.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Mrs. Marguerite (Roy) Campbell; nieces, Mrs. Betty (Ralph) Mercer of Philadelphia; Mrs. Neta Burke of Miami, Fla.; Mrs. Nancy Lou) McRoberts of Sun City, Ariz.; a nephew and his wife, William and Donna Robinson of Minneapolis, Minn.; several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Friends are invited to call from 2-3 p.m. today at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 So. Main St., Horseheads, N.Y. His funeral and committal service will be held at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Edmunds officiating. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira. The family will provide their own flowers, but those wishing may express their sympathy through the Living Memorial of the North Presbyterian Church, Elmira, or by memorials in “Doc’s” name to the charity of one’s choice. –Towanda Daily Review.
