William Conant
William C. Conant, 89, of Charleston, N. H., formerly of Greenfield, Franklin County Trust Co, employee for 57 years, died Monday at Sullivan Country Home in Unity N. H.
He was born in Greenfield February 1. 1884, son of Mary Ketchum and Samuel Dimick Conant. He married Emma Perry of Gill in 1910.
He is survived by a sister, Octavia, and a daughter, Eleanor Benjamin both of Sudbury; four sons, David of Charlestown, N. H. where he resided for the past several years; Samuel of Captiva Island, Fla.; Chester of Greenfield; John of Conway; 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A fifth son, Roger was killed on the aircraft carrier Franklin in World War ll.
Conant was a direct lineal descendant of Roger Conant, who came to this country in1623 from England. He was for many years treasurer of the Salvation Army and the Franklin County Agricultural Society.
He was member of the Greenfield lodge of Masons and a life long sports fan. He was presented a lifetime pass to Greenfield High School sports events for 65 years of faithful attendance. He was very interested in the Cub Scouts movement and served for many years as a trustee of Greenfield Public Library and GRC Assn. He was a lifetime member of St. James Episcopal Church.
Services will be at 10 A.m. Thursday at St. James Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Green River Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Diabetes Foundation, Joselin Clinic, Pilgrim Rd. Boston, care of Dr. Alexander Marble.

GREENFIELD -- Chester C. Conant Sr., 93, of Greenfield died Monday (9-1-08) at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke.
He was born in Greenfield on Aug. 21, 1915, the son of William C. and Erma (Perry) Conant. He was prominent in athletics and was a graduate of Greenfield High School and Deerfield Academy and received his Bachelor's degree in recreational planning from Mass. State. He was a lifelong resident of Greenfield.
Chet was a sales representative for Lunt Silversmiths for over 40 years, retiring in 1977.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. with the 529th Fighter Squadron ''Flying Tigers,'' where he flew over 50 combat missions in Panama, China, Burma and India during WWII and attained the rank of first lieutenant. Among other citations, he was awarded the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross.
Chet was an avid golfer and a lifelong member of the Country Club of Greenfield. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing, hunting, skiing, gardening and oil painting.
His wife, the former Eleanor R. Robichaud, predeceased him on Nov. 24, 2007.
Survivors include four sons, William C. and Charles R. of Greenfield, Chester C. Jr. of Amesbury and Robert L. of Rye, N.H.; a daughter, Mary McManus of Hopkinton; a brother, John of Conway; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sons, Richard ''Birdie'' P. in 2001 and James L. in 2008.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. James Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Cerrato, rector, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal St., will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.
