Bob was born in Reading, Massachusetts on New Year's Eve, 1901, the son of George Hatch and Grace Parker Clough. He attended Andover Academy and Harvard University and was well known for his ability to play golf. He was Bobby Jone's partner at one time. After college, Bob married M. Marion Burditt and went to work for the Shell Oil Company. He worked his way up to a manager in the New York Office. He continued to play golf and won many trophies at the Wingfoot Golf Club. He retired in 1950 and moved to San Diego with his wife.
Bob met Bob Peterson on the golf course and they founded "Jack-in-the-Box" restaurants and Foodmaker Corporation to supply them.
Bob and Marion separated shortly after they moved to California and several years later he married Ruth Hill Goulding of San Diego. Marion and Bob had one son, Donald, born in 1927 and 6 granddaughters.
