Don was the only child born to Robert M and Marion Burditt Clough. He was born in Reading, Massachusetts, but grew up in Westchester County, N.Y living first in White Plains and then in Bronxville, N.Y. Don graduated from Bronxville High School in three years getting extra units at Farragut Naval Academy during summers. He entered the U.S. Navy during the final year of World War II.
When he was discharged, he enrolled in Stanford University, majoring in Economics. He again attained his degree in three years by attending summer classes at Columbia University. Don graduated in 1949 and entered Stanford Business School in the fall. He left business school in the spring and married April 1, 1950 Mildred Welch.
Don worked for the Schlage Lock Company, then joined the Group Insurance department of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company. He was stationed in Buffalo, New York for 4 years, then transferred to Portland, Oregon. In 1961, the family moved to Woodside, CA. Don worked for several, different Insurance companies over the years. By 1970, he had left the insurance business and helped found and finance a number of different companies eventually also doing business in Reno, Nevada. He and his wife were the parents of 6 daughters.

Charles Sumner Burdett, known as Sum, was the younger son of Charles F. and Annie Carpenter Burditt. Born and brought up in North Reading, he attended local public schools and Reading Senior High School, graduating in the class of 1930. He then attended and graduated from Burdett College of Business Administration in Boston. His talent for music, however, soon placed him in a prominent place before the public.
During his high school days he was the leader of an orchestra which was frequently in demand throughout the district. He served in the Navy during World War II.
Later he held a position with a well-known academy of music as instructor of piano, and has appeared frequently on radio programs. He made his living giving piano lessons. Sumner lived with his father on his father's farm on Main Street in North Reading. He never married. He often played with famous bands when they came to play in Boston. He had a brother, Edward Burdett and a sister, Marion Burdett Clough.
