Story
Herbert Inman, oldest son of Charles G. and Margaret Johnson Inman, was born about 1861 in French Creek, Chautaqua Co., NY. According to family tradition, passed on to me by my grandmother Bertha Henry (Herbert's niece), Herbert left Venango Twp, Erie Co., PA to go "out west" to become a cowboy. From his dress in this photograph I would guess that it was taken at that time in his life.
The family received word from him that he had decided to return home to PA. His trunk arrived but he never did. The family checked but found that he was never seen after he had received his pay and departed the ranch for the train. Consensus is that he was bushwhacked and robbed enroute to the train. Nothing remains to give clues to where he was working before his presumed death.2
