CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Mary Burdett Porterfield, 91, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Winchester, Va. Born Nov. 13, 1911, in Glens Falls, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William Elliott and Claribel McIntosh Burdett.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip T. Porterfield Jr., in 1999. They were married July 27, 1946. She was a 1929 graduate of Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y.; and a 1933 graduate of Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass. She taught at several schools, including St. Hilda's Hall in Ranson, W.Va. She served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II. She was a member of Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town. She was past treasurer of Old Charles Town Library; a volunteer Girl Scout leader; and a volunteer at Charles Town Hospital.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan P. Golladay of Stephens City, Va. and Virginia P. Crawford of Bridgeport, W.Va.; one son, Philip T. Porterfield III of Charles Town; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town. The Rev. Melanie McCarley will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Episcopal Church Yard Cemetery in Charles Town. There will be no visitation. Memorial donations may be made to Old Charles Town Library, 200 E.
