Cornelius Hanks was born June 17, 1828 at Salem, N.Y. and Frances Fruit was born Dec. 30, 1830 in Missouri. They were married Dec. 29, 1850 in Adams Co. Ill. They lived at Shenandoah, Iowa. They had 8 children.

In 1896 Cornelius and his sons came to Hay Springs, Nebraska in a covered wagon. His wife Francis and the daughters-in-laws and children followed by train. They all settled in an area a few miles west and northwest of Hay Springs. Frances was an invalid for many years. She passed away in 1900. Cornelius lived until 1908.
