Sidney Dwight Root was born on 14 March 1824 in Montague, Massachusetts.¹
In 1843 Root left Vermont to work for his brother-in-law William Rawson (sister Julia'a husband) in Lumpkin GA as a store clerk. By 1855 he owned the business alone.²
Sidney married Mary H Clarke on 17 April 1849 in Lumkin, Georgia.¹
Sidney became a slave-owner upon his marriage - Mary's parents gave the couple 3 slaves as a wedding present.²
Sidney wrote an unpubliched memoir 'Memorandum of My Life'. He also wrote? and published 'Primary Bible Questions for Young Children', a booklet that sold around 20,000 copies.²
In 1858 Sidney Dwight Root lived in Atlanta, Georgia.²
Sidney was active in the Civil War, supplying the Confederate Army with goods imported from Europe - blockade running.²
He promoted a controversial plan to recruit slaves into the Confederate Army - and they would be freed. Eventually J efferson Davis agreed, and then Rober E Lee; however the idea was never implemented.²
In 1866 the family moved to New York city, for the education of their children.²
In 1878 Sidney and Mary moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he devoted his time to religious and other charitable causes.²
