E. L. "Vern" Melius, 88, of Huron, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at SunQuest Health Care Center in Huron.
His funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at Riverview United Methodist Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., or Monday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church. Vern Melius was born on May 14, 1922, in Huron to Harold and Gladys (Hopper) Melius. He graduated from Huron High School in 1940 and excelled in track. He was a member of a relay team that broke all the South Dakota records for relay events.
He married Marcella Moe on June 6, 1943, in Woonsocket. Vern farmed until he took an apprenticeship and eventually a utility lineman job with Northwestern Public Service in 1954. After Marcella died in 1972, Vern moved to Crown Point, Ind., to work at St. Anthony Medical Center. There he met Mary Ellen Logsdon whom he married on June 6, 1988. The couple returned to Huron in 1997.
Vern was a member of the IBEW for over 50 years, and was the recipient of the Red Cross Life Saving Certificate for saving a citizen's life while working in Highmore. Vern loved to visit the Miners' farms, helping with harvest and enjoyed dropping a line in the James River to see what was biting.
Vern is survived by his four children: Leland (Susan) Melius of Spring Valley, Wash., Terry (Patsy) Melius of Lampe, Mo., Cathy Yauney of Onida, and Pam (Charles) Miner of Cavour; nine grandchildren: Toby (Vicky) Sarahan, Jason (Diann) Sarahan, Jennifer Miner, Nelson Miner, Nathan Miner, Joe Melius, David Melius, Marci (Jason) Sims, Grady (Sarah) Melius; 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean (Ray) Krawchison of Glendale, Ariz.; and nieces and nephews.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Simon Rhoads; wives, Marcella in 1972 and Mary in 2007; a sister, Fern Smith; and a brother-in-law, Walter (Red) Murphy.

Mary Melius, age 77, wife of Vern Melius, of 839 Colorado Ave. SW, Huron, died Monday, April 23, 2007, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, April 26, at Riverview United Methodist Church with Rev. Iva Laudermith officiating. Burial will be at Demotte, Indiana. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Wdnesday evening at the funeral home.
Mary Melius was born Mary Ellen Logsdon on April 3, 1930, to Lloyd and Viola (Yott) Logsdon at Lake Village, Indiana, where she grew up and attended school. In her mid twenties Mary moved to Demotte, Indiana, and worked at the Permanite Factory in nearby Morocco, Indiana. She later worked as a nurse's aid at the Roselawn Health Center at Demotte.
On June 6, 1988, Mary married Ellsworth "Vern" Melius at Demotte, where they lived until moving to Huron in 1997. She was a member of Riverview United Methodist Church, and the BCNU Extension Club which crafted items for cultural arts. She enjoyed crocheting and making baby quilts for distribution throughout the area. She is survived by her husband, Vern of Huron; 4 step-children, . . . ; 9 grandchildren, . . . ; 6 great grandchildren; and 1 brother, Lawrence (Mary) Logsdon of Lake Village, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents.
