Obituary Notice

An obituary was published

Our beloved mother, Ruth (Crandall) Knudsen, formerly of Alpine, Utah and Monte Sereno, California, passed peacefully away at the age of 98 on February 27, 2023, in South Jordan, Utah. Ruth is survived by her younger brother, John David Crandall; her four children- Linda Maddox, Ruthanne Kokkonen, Guy William Knudsen, and Grant Lee Knudsen; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great- grandchild.
Ruth was born on January 10, 1925, in Springville, Utah to parents Grant LaSalle Crandall and Golda Ruth Beckstead. She was the third of four children in the family. Ruth wrote that, "We had a good home life; my parents were loving and kind, and we were a close family". When Ruth was 7 years old, her family moved to Salt Lake City where she lived until she graduated from East High school at the age of 17. During her senior year, Ruth worked at the Lion House as a server for wedding receptions and private parties. Ruth wrote, "I enjoyed serving. The ladies in the kitchen were such nice people and good cooks. Their rolls had to be the best I have ever tasted." This was perhaps the beginning of Ruth's love of cooking and becoming such a good cook herself.
After her graduation from East High, Ruth moved to Provo, Utah, to live with her paternal grandmother and took classes from Brigham Young University. On one occasion, Ruth attended a party where she met a young man named Bill who immediately showed his interest. Ruth later wrote, "Bill always told people that he had a hard time persuading me to marry him. I admit I wasn't too receptive, but as I got to know him and his wonderful family, I realized that the Lord was really blessing me because I began to see Bill in a different light". Bill (William Claire Knudsen) and Ruth were eventually married in the Salt Lake temple on August 31, 1948. They were life-long partners of nearly 74 years.
The following nearly 50 years were mostly spent in California where Ruth's husband, Bill, worked for Standard Oil of California, Lockheed Space and Missiles Corp., and finally for NASA. During those years, Ruth was a supportive and devoted wife and mother while occasionally working outside the home to help with finances. She really excelled at being a homemaker and loved to cook, sew, read, and knit. Cooking was really a life-long love of hers and her family benefited from that talent. Her recipes are being passed down the family from children to grandchildren and so on. They are the topic of many family get-togethers as well as her competitive spirit when she played her favorite rummy card game that took place around the kitchen table whenever family was visiting.
Throughout the years in California, Ruth contributed her time to serving in numerous leadership positions at church as well as generously opening her home on occasions to youth who needed a place to stay. Eventually, her mother, Golda, moved in with the family, and Ruth cared for her for a period of over 20 years. When her husband, Bill, officially retired in 1996, he and Ruth moved back "home" to Utah (Alpine, St. George, and South Jordan) where they lived the remainder of their lives.
Beginning in her early 50's, Ruth was afflicted with several debilitating eye conditions that eventually led to her loss of sight in the last years of her life. Though this gradual loss of eyesight created challenges and hardships for her over the years, she seemed to take it in her stride and didn't let it stop her from doing the things she loved or needed to do. Ultimately, however, she had to give up on most things that had given such pleasure and meaning to her life and came to rely heavily on her faithful companion of so many years. When Bill died suddenly of complications due to Covid this past July (7 months prior to Ruth's passing), Ruth began a steady decline in health that finally culminated in her passing from this life to join those who went before her.
Those close to Ruth will remember her as a dedicated, loving wife and mother; a grandma who loved to play card games; a wonderful cook; a good and loyal friend; and, finally, a capable woman of strong spirit. Those who helped take care of her in her last months here on earth have remarked that they will miss her beautiful, contagious smile which would surface occasionally along with her spunky spirit. Though she will be greatly missed by all those left behind, she is now happily reunited with her loving husband and can walk upright and see the glories of heaven.
