  • Joseph Sprague was a commission merchant.2
  • He married Maria DeBevois on 24 October 1811.1
  • In 1825 he was elected member of the board of Trustees of his village, and in 1827 was elected it president, serving 4 terms. It was due to his efforts that the city of Brooklyn obtained his charter in 1833. He started the street cleaning system in spite of ridicule.1,2
  • In 1843 he was elected mayor of Brooklyn, and served two terms. He was quite popular. He was a Jacksonian democrat. During his first term the Whig members of the common council refused to attend meetings and he had them arrested on the charge of misdemeanor in neglect of public business and compelled their obedience. His earnest advocating consolidation resulted in the union of Williamsburg and Bushwick with Brooklyn. Repeatedly a member of the board of supervisors as late as 1851. A man of great influence and above reproach.2
  • He and Maria appeared on the 1850 US Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, enumerated on 6 September 1850. reporting real estate valued at $34,200. Also listed is Jane Debevaise age 40 born in NY (probably a younger sister of Maria), Matilda Scott, age 17 from Ireland, and Mary Franklin age 32 born in NY, and is black.3
  • He died on 12 December 1854 at age 71.2
