Edmund Wood¹

• Edmund Wood was born about 1550.¹

• Edmund lived in the Shelf-Northowram area. He may have married in 1572/1573 Alice Edwards or Jenet Hurst, but neither of these names appear among his descendants, while the name Susan occurs often.

  He is mentioned in the will of his son-in-law, Thomas Butterfield, on 16 September 1614. He is not mentioned in the will of his son John on 27 May 1618, but he might have been a witness to the will.¹

  Edmund was an original settler of Springfield MA; in May and and Jonas had lots laid out for them adjoining the mill brook. He was at Wethersfield in 1637, Stamford in 1641, and in 1647 was a proprietor at Hempstead, Long Island.¹

• John is probably the one baptized at Halifax on 22 March 1583/1584: "John, son of Edmund Wood of Northourom."

  He is probably the one who married at Halifax 30 December 1609, Dorothy Moakson. He is called a resident of Shelf when his children were baptized at Halifax.

  The will of John Wood of Shelf is dated 27 May 1618. It reads: "To my three children, Susan, Mary and John all my messuages and lands in Shelfe and all my other goods and chattels equally amongst them saving L3-10-0 to be taken ut for the bringing up of my daughter Mary. Witnesses, William Ambler, Godfrey Walker, Edmund Wood and Gilbert Longbotham. Executors, my brother Edmund Wood and my loving brother-in-law, Matthew Mitchell." The will was proved 3 May 1619. His wife was evidently deceased.¹
