Parents

Children with Hannah Carter (b. 1604, d. 24 March 1678/79)

Biography

  • Robert Titus was born in 1600 in St Catherine's Parish, Stansted Abbots, Hertfordshire, England.1,2
  • He married Hannah Carter, daughter of Robert Carter and Petronella Curel, on 24 June 1624 in England.1,3
  • Robert Titus and Hannah Carter immigrated on the ship Hopewell arriving in 1635 in Muddy River (now Brookline), Massachusetts.4
  • In 1638 Robert and Hannah moved to Weymouth, Massachusetts.2
  • In 1644 Robert reported the value of his estate as 156£ 10sh. This was so the size of the allotments of land could be distributed correctly.5
  • In 1643 Robert and Hannah moved to Rehoboth, Massachusetts, with their children and Rev. Samuel Newman and most of the church of Weymouth.5
  • Robert was involved in town offices - he was a fence inspector in 1645, and also a collector of revenue. In 1649 and 1650 he was chosen to be a Deputy of the Court.5
  • On 6 June 1654 Robert was called into court and told to move his family out of Plymouth Colony for allowing Abner Ordway and a woman with children, 'persons of evil fame' to live in his home. They may have been Quakers, but most probably were accused of witchcraft.5
  • In 1654 Robert and Hannah moved to Huntington, New York, with their children.5
  • He died before 1697 in Huntington, New York.1

Story

Rehoboth was a large territory west of Plymouth and was comprised of what is at present Rehoboth, Seekonk, Attleborough, North Attleborough, Massachusetts as well as East Providence, Pawtucket and Cumberland, Rhode Island. The actual town green and church were located in what is now Rumford, Rhode Island just west of the Ten Mile River. The original town green is now a cemetery where the graves of many of the early settlers including Rev. Newman are buried. The eight acres of land that Robert and his family lived on in the 1640's is still undeveloped with the exception of a few residential homes.
