MARGARET WHITCOMB BEARDSLEY

BLUE HILL – Margaret Whitcomb Beardsley died at her cottage on Weymouth Point in Surry, on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004. She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, James Hartness Beardsley.
Margaret was born on Nov. 12, 1912, in Ellsworth, the daughter of Katherine Laffin and Benjamin B. Whitcomb. She attended the Ellsworth schools, graduated from Mount Holyoke, and did graduate work in astrophysics at Smith College. She spent 20 years working in the field of astronomy, and was a member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers and of Sigma Xi. Margaret married James Hartness Beardsley of Springfield, Vt., and they spent many years in Canada, where Margaret was active in the Red Cross and the Girl Guides. She was a devoted member and deacon of the Blue Hill Congregational Church, a trustee of the Jonathan Fisher Museum, and a director of the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.
Margaret was predeceased by her brothers, John and Benjamin Whitcomb. She is survived by her son, Christopher and his wife, Judy, of Orleans, Mass.; her son, William and his wife, Betsy, of Bangor; her son, Anthony and his wife, Betty, of Surry; and her daughter, Anna Kay Walsh of Montreal, Canada; as well as by 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many loved friends.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Congregational Church of Blue Hill, P.O. Box 444, Blue Hill, ME or to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital P.O.
