Obituary Condolences
John Benjamin Howland Sr., 80, of 21 Pines Lodge, Williamstown, died Monday afternoon, July 17, 2006, at the North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted June 30.
Born in Brandon, Vt., on June 14, 1926, he was the son of Wendell R. and Elizabeth (Gravel) Howland. He attended schools in Brandon and came to North Adams as a teenager.
Mr. Howland was last employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams for over 25 years, until his retirement in 1987. Prior to that, he worked at the former Brightwater Paper Co. In his younger years, he operated a gun shop with Stan Peikos. Following his retirement, he worked as a security guard at Mass MoCA.
Mr. Howland was a member of the First Baptist Church, North Adams. In 1987, he was recognized as a 50-year member of the church.
He was proud of his heritage as a descendant of John Howland, who came to America on the Mayflower in 1620.
He enjoyed bowling fishing, and playing cards.
His wife, the former Mary Janice Jones, died on July 1, 1995. They were married March 29, 1947.
He leaves sons, John Benjamin Howland Jr. and Wayne James Howland, both of North Adams, Steven Bruce Howland of the town of Florida, and Kirk Clinton Howland of Williamstown, with whom he made his home; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucretia Foley of Brushton, N.Y.; a brother, Richard Howland of Williamstown; nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Mary Elizabeth Baribeau, died June 1, 1994. A brother, Robert Howland also is deceased.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for John B. Howland Sr. will be held Friday, July 21, 9 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, North Adams, with the Rev. David Anderson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours are Thursday, 4-7 p.m., at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
