Laura Brown Montant
LAURA BROWN MONTANT Passed away on September 21, 2009 peacefully at Family Manor in Stuart. She was born July 19, 1916 and worked as a writer for various New York publications. She was the wife of the late A. Philippe Montant.
She is survived by her sister Fredrica Lincoln of ME, her sons P. Townsend Montant (Teresa) of Shelter Island, NY and Tilden Montant (Martha Clements) of Durham, NC. She will be interned at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Stuart Fl and a memorial service will be planned for the future. Laura Brown Montant
Laura Brown Montant, a former member of the Bridgehampton Club and a journalist who contributed to both The East Hampton Star and The Southampton Press in the 1970s, died at home in Stuart, Fla., on Sept. 21. She was 93. Mrs. Montant was a longtime resident of Wainscott, but moved to Stuart in 1980. Beginning in the 1950s, she had worked as a writer for The New York World Telegram and The New York Daily News.
Born in Cedarhurst on July 19, 1916, the daughter of Fredrick Rhinelander Brown and the former Laura Pelton Hazard, she grew up in New York City and attended Miss Hewitt’s and the Dalton School. In the 1960s, she worked as a medical secretary. She also served as a volunteer nurse at Bellevue Hospital.
She was married in 1951 to A. Philippe Montant. The couple moved to Wainscott full time in 1970. Mr. Montant died in 1993. Mrs. Montant loved to read and play tennis and golf. Before leaving the East End, she and her husband photographed many local weddings and families here.
She is survived by two sons, Philippe Townsend Montant of Shelter Island and Tilden Hazard Montant of Durham, N.C., and a sister, Frederica Lincoln of Wiscasset, Me.
Mrs. Montant was cremated and will be interred next to her husband’s burial site in a garden behind St. Mary’s Church in Stuart. A memorial service will take place in Stuart at a future date. The family has suggested memorial contributions to a hospice service of the donor’s choice.
Teresa Montant
Teresa Montant, 54, died Oct. 27, 2011, at Southampton Hospital, N.Y.
She was born in Owensboro, Ky., grew up in Aurora, Ill., and lived in Shelter Island since 1998, coming from Stuart. She graduated from West Aurora High School in 1975. She obtained a bachelor of science degree in parks and recreation from Alderson Broaddus College in Philippi, W.Va. in 1996. In 1997, she earned a master's degree in theological studies at the Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando.
She was secretary to the Shelter Island highway supervisor and commissioner of public works and a former director at Camp Quinipet. She was the first female youth director at the United Methodist Church in Stuart. She worked as a recreational leader for the city of Stuart and for the Martin County Parks and Recreation Department. She was a member of The Shelter Island Country Club, the Shelter Island Lions Club, as well as a booster member of The American Legion. She was instrumental in raising awareness of breast density and breast cancer by instituting the "Real Men Wear Pink" event on Shelter Island. She was working on promoting legislation to educate women about breast density.
Survivors include her husband of 11 years, Townsend "Towny" Montant; brothers, Mark Lacy of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and David Lacy of Oswego, Ill.; and sisters, Mary Lacy and Patricia Harris, both of Colorado Springs, Colo. She was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Lacy; brother, Mike Lacy; stepsister, Beth Garrity; and parents, Shirley and Cliff Lacy.

Sarah Montant
Mrs. Sarah Calhoun Montant of Georgetown 79, died Tuesday March 29 1991, at the Sandpiper Convalescent Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Funeral services were today Thursday March 21 1991, in the Georgetown Presbyterian Church in Georgetown with the Dr. William P. Brown and the Rev. James Lowry officiating. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery Annex under the direction of Mayer Funeral Home.
Mrs. Montant was born in Whitmire on February 29 1912 a daughter of the late Charles Alexander Calhoun and Mrs. Jannie Wright Calhoun. She was a graduate of Winyah High School Converse College, and the University of South Carolina School of Law. Mrs. Montant taught school for a time in Whitmire. She lived in Cincinnati Ohio prior to returning to live in Georgetown. She had been employed as a legal worker in Washington DC a Circuit Court worker in Spartanburg, and was a Chapter Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Cincinnati. Mrs. Montant was a member of the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church. She was married to the late Louis T. Montant Jr who died in 1983.
Surviving are a brother in law A. Philappe Montant of Stuart Fla; a sister in law E. Gayle McGuivan of New York NY; and a number of cousins.
The family suggests memorials to the church or charity of one's choice.
