Story
Son of Henry Johnson (1771-1859) and Mary Merritt (1778-1856). The youngest child in a family that included 12 children. Married Martha Davidson in February of 1849 in Lincoln County, Ontario. The marriage was blessed with 8 children. The family resided in Ontario until about 1860 when all but the eldest daughter Emma left for Huron County, Michigan. Emma remained in Lincoln County with her grandparents William and Ann Davidson. In Michigan Smith purchased 40 acres in Dwight Township in 1861 under the Graduation Act of 1854 for $20. At the time, the land would have been wilderness. The first state road through the county was not surveyed until 1861. Slowly the land was cultivated and a home built. By 1890 the family farm in Dwight Township owned by Smith and his sons Alexander, Edmund and William had grown to 140 acres. They produced corn, oats, wheat, peas, potatoes and apples, as well as butter and honey. After Edmund and William married they each moved away from the original homesite, leaving the remaining land to their oldest brother Alexander. Over the last 20 years of his life, Smith lived with his sons in Michigan and his daughter Martha in Strathroy, Ontario. He died in Strathroy at the age of 98. Martha's husband James Wesley Prangley, was the informant on his death certificate. Cause of death was listed as a heart attack.
