Maurice Hatheway "Mo" Howes, 70, of 56 Elm St., a resident engineer on construction projects for the Connecticut Department of Transportation for Metcalf & Eddy, Inc., died Saturday at home.
He began his career with the State of Connecticut Highway Department and later was town engineer for the Town of Windsor. He worked as a sales engineer for New England Metal Culvert Co. and was chief engineer for the Town of Enfield sanitary sewer project.
He had also been employed by the Della Construction Co. in Enfield and the Mather Construction Co. in Bloomfield.
Born in Windsor, he was a graduate of Loomis School there and earned his bachelor of science from the University of Vermont.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
He lived in Simsbury and Longmeadow before moving to Enfield 20 years ago.
He was a member of the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, the Vermont Society of Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Public Works Association. He was a member and past master of St. Mark's Lodge of Masons 91 in Granby, Conn.
He was a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church in Enfield where he sang in the choir and served on many committees.
He leaves his wife, the former Arlene Heywood; a son, Thomas of Napa, Calif.; three daughters, Holly Howes of Canaan, Vt., Beth Losty of Windsor Locks, and Jennifer Howes of Hartford; three stepdaughters, Kristin Kavanagh of Alexandria, Va., Karin O'Keefe of Feeding Hills, and Kathryn Kavanagh of Austin, Texas; a brother, Charles F. Howes of Elkton, Md.; and nine grandchildren, and two nieces.
He was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Hatheway Howes.
The funeral will be held Wednesday evening at the church, with a graveside service Thursday morning at the Longmeadow Cemetery in Longmeadow. Calling hours at the Nicholson and Carmon Funeral Home, Suffield, are Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the Music Fund at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, Enfield.
