John Joseph Laivell, age 86, of Rochester, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
John was born on August 31, 1924 in Chatfield, MN to Frank and Lillie Laivell. He attended Chatfield Public Schools, graduating from Chatfield High School in 1943. After graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and serving as a Mortar Crewman in the Pacific Theater, and was wounded during combat on the island of Guam. He married Mary May York in 1946. John and Mary later moved to Rochester, where he began his career with the Rochester Police Department in 1958. He retired in 1985 as a Lieutenant, after 26 years of service. He was a longstanding member of the VFW, American Legion, Eagles Club, and the Marine Corps League. He was a lifetime member of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers. He was a champion trap-shooter, avid hunter, and fisherman. During his retirement he spent many hours reading and studying American military history.
John is survived by his children, Faye (Mike) Conrad of Owatonna, Mary Joan (Gary) Prigge of Wabasha, John Michael Laivell of Rochester, Debra (Brett) Dornack of Stewartville. Sister, Joan Laivell of Chatfield, and five grandchildren: Jason, Michelle, Joseph, Jeffery and Madison.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary and a sister Virginia Hasskamp.
A Funeral Mass is planned for Monday, March 28, 2011 at 10:30AM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Timothy T. Reker officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 92 of Rochester outside the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Chatfield at a later date.
Memorials are preferred to the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots Program.

Mary May York was born March 29, 1922, in Fairmont. She grew up in Lake City and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. She later graduated from Winona Teachers College and worked as a teacher in the Zumbro Falls, Chatfield, Hammond and Rochester school districts. She also worked as a special needs teacher at the Rochester State Hospital. In Sept. 1946, she married John J. Laivell. Mr. Laivell is a retired Rochester police officer.
She enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and spending time with grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, John of Rochester; her children, Faye (Michael) Conrad of Chatfield, Mary Jo (Gary) Prigge of Wabasha, John M. of Rochester, and Debra (Brett) Dornack of Stewartville; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
