  • Joseph Denny Sargent was a farmer and manufacturer of hand cards.
  • He died on 24 May 1849 in Leicester, Massachusetts, at age 62.1
  • He was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Leicester, Massachusetts.3

  • Joseph was a practical farmer, surveyor and manufacturer of hand cards. In 1813 he began manufacturing hand cards for the carding of wool and cotton (used in the preparation for spinning) as a winter occupation for his farm hands. Joseph and his brother Henry were partners until Henry's death in 1829. In 1820 he was treasurer of the Congregational Society - he made a report dated 28 Apr 1820. In 1832 Albert Warren was an apprentice for 3 years, being paid $350. In 1834 Josiah Q Lamb was an apprentice. In 1834 he contributed $250 towards building of a meeting house for the Second Congregational Society (Unitarian). Later he withdrew and rejoined the First, but his wife remained with the Second. In 1835 he speculated in land in Maine (along with other leading citizens of Leicester) and lost very heavily. 1835-1838 he was out of work, just a farmer, and finances were very low. The manufacture of cards was later resumed. He served in the State Militia, rising to Colonel. Member of MA Legislature in 1838 and 1846. He had at various times as partners: Silas Jones, Nathan Ainsworth and William Barr.

Biography

  • Joseph Sargent was born on 6 July 1716 in Malden, Massachusetts.1
  • In 1741 Joseph moved to Leicester, Massachusetts, with his cousin Nathan Sargent. Leicester had been settled in the early part of the 18th century largely by people from Malden, MA.2
  • His cousin Nathan bought 100 acres for a farm on Chestnut Hill spending £200 on the purchase. The land was in the eastern part of Leicester on the Worcester edge of town. Joseph's 40 acres joined Nathan's on the west.2
  • In an article by C C Denny in 1893 titled 'An Ancient Road, and Reminiscences of some Families who Dwelt on it' he stated: 'A few rods down the hill from the old Nathan Sargent place and on the westerly part of the Nathan Sargent farm stood a house build by Joseph Sargent in 1746. It was built on a high bank with a carriage road running upclose to the front door, two stories in front and one story in the rear.' Joseph's house was razed in 1831 after the death of his 2 unmarried daughters who continued to live in the house after their father's death.2
  • He married Hannah Whittemore, daughter of Daniel Whittemore and Mary Chamberlin, on 20 January 1746/47 in Malden, Massachusetts.3,4
