Obit Notice

An obituary was published

Dr. Wayne W. Brown, 84, of Ames, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 at Northridge Village in Ames.

Wayne was born August 21, 1931 to Verna (Hughes) and Charles Norman Brown in Ames, Iowa. In 1939, the Brown family moved to Compton Farm in Herndon, Va. where Wayne grew to love animals and decided to become a veterinarian.

After returning to Ames in 1942, the family lived at the State Street Agronomy Farm. Wayne graduated from Ames High School in 1949 and Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1955. He was a Cardinal Key and member of Delta Upsilon fraternity.

In 1954, Wayne was united in marriage to Doris J. Blair of Fairfield, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Wayne began practicing veterinary medicine in Orion, Ill. In 1959, Wayne and Doris moved to Paw Paw, Ill. where he started his own practice. As his practice expanded, he established the Tri-County Veterinary Service in 1970 in nearby Earlville. For more than 40 years, Wayne was affectionately known as "Doc Brown" by those he served.

A loving husband, proud father and grandfather, devoted brother and uncle, Wayne was committed to his community, profession and family. He was active in the Lions Club, Boy Scouts and an elder at Paw Paw Presbyterian Church. He served as chairman for the Paw Paw Labor Day Parade and, together with Doris, led the Centennial Committee in 1982. In 2014, the village honored him as Grand Marshal of the Labor Day Parade.

Wayne was named National Swine Practitioner of the Year by the American Association of Swine Practitioners in 1984. Wayne received the Stange Award from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. He was president of the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association and authored "A Hundred Years of Veterinary Medicine in Illinois 1882-1982." For continuing education, Wayne attended annual conventions of the American Veterinary Medical Association which often doubled as summer vacations for the Brown family. His family was a top priority in his work and life.

In retirement, Wayne enjoyed attending his grandchildren's events, spending time with classmates from Ames High, friends at bridge, couple's golf and men's coffee hour. He was an avid fan of Iowa State athletics, a volunteer at Reiman Gardens and a deacon at Collegiate Presbyterian Church.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Doris Brown of Ames; four children, Bryan (Linda) Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bruce (Barbara) Stewart-Brown of Salisbury, Md., Gayle (Tyler Holck) of Gilbert, and Diane (Mark) Ditman of Sugar Land, Texas; and eight grandchildren, Elaine (Gregg) Bauer of St Louis, Mo., Ben (Emily) Stewart-Brown of Athens, Ga., Lauren Stewart-Brown of Chicago, Ill., Jaime and Matt Ditman of Sugar Land, and Blair, Johanna and Garrison Holck of Gilbert. He is also survived by two brothers, C. Norman (Carolyn) Brown of Normal, Ill. and L. Keith (Ruth) Brown of Pittsburgh, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elsie (Brown) Huber.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19 at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, 159 N. Sheldon, Ames. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, also at the church. The family is planning a celebration of Wayne's life on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Paw Paw Presbyterian Church, Paw Paw, Ill. Information will be posted at the Torman Funeral Home website.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa State Veterinary Student Scholarship Fund at http://www.foundation.iastate.edu and/or Collegiate Presbyterian Church University Ministries at http://www.cpcames.org/index.cfm.
