• "He enlisted as a private soldier, in June, 1776, in Col. John Chester's Regiment of Connecticut Troops, was in the action with the British troops at Flatbush in Long Island, Aug 27, and in the rear guard of General Washington's Army in their retreat from Long Island to New York, Aug 30, 1776, and in the action at White Plains, Oct 128, 1776; discharged with the Regiment at Salisbury, in Pennsylvania, Dec 25, 1776; went home, and entered the service again in April, 1777, when he joined Col. John Chandler's Regiment of Continental Troops, at Danbury, and in May was transferred to the General Hospital Department, where he served as Clerk, until Dec 15, 1778, when he received the appointment of Storekeeper, and served in that capacity until March 13, 1781; in May, 1781, became first Clerk in the office of Ralph Pomeroy, Esq, Deputy Quartermaster-General, at Hartford, where he continued until September, 1783."²
