Children with Cyril Potter (b. June 1822)

Biography

  • Clarinda Gray was born on 23 March 1827 in Potsdam, New York.1
  • She married Cyril Potter on 21 May 1849.1
  • Cyril Potter and Clarinda appeared on the 1860 US Federal Census of Van Buren, Wayne County, Michigan, enumerated on 7 June 1860.2
  • Cyril Potter and Clarinda appeared on the 1870 US Federal Census in Van Buren, Wayne County, Michigan, enumerated on 2 June 1870. reporting real estate valued at $10,000 and a personal estate of $1,725.3

Story

"In the fall after she was fifteen, she attended a protracted meeting for several weeks and at that time she gave her heart to God. Her sister Clarissa was converted at the same time. The next spring a fearful epidemic broke out in Potsdam and she was one of the first to be taken sick, and for weeks she hovered between life and death. The crisis was favorably passed, but before she recovered her mother and oldest sister were taken sick and both died. This was the beginning of trouble, for the care of the household devolved upon her, and although she had been taught to work, yet without a mother to direct or comfort her it was different. In two years another mother came to the home, and she left to take care of herself. She went to her uncle, Wm. Gray's, at Ellisburgh and stayed several months, and while there became acquainted with the young man she afterward married. She was at home two years with poor health---not able to do anything. She mar. Cyril Potter, May 21, 1849, and went direct to Michigan, where she has ever since lived. Herself and husband are members of the Baptist church and by a consistent Christian life are endeavoring to honor their God and be a blessing to those about them."
