"He was a kind, honest, good-hearted man, but lacked calculation. All his plans turned upside down before accomplishment. He undertook several kinds of business, but grew financially worse with each one. His life was a struggle with poverty, and he hardly became master of the situation until death came.
He his and wife early united with the Congregational church; believing in its sacred ordinances, they brought their children, one by one, to the altar of consecration. The result has been the covenant blessings have rested upon their household. He removed, with his family, on to a farm at South Canton, St. Lawrence Co., N. Y., about the year 1823; was soon chosen deacon of the Congregational church there, and held the office until his death, May 31, 1849, age 62 years."
