• "Deacon John served on the Board of War and was a member of a convention called at Winsor, Vermont in 1776 to aid in establishing the independence of Vermont as a state. The Committee met first at Dorset in 1775 and again in 1776 at the home of Aphas Kent. Deacon John was a member of the Committee of Safety. He was a member of Captain Gray's Company, Ira Allins Vermont Militia, 1781 ad [sic] 1782. He was a prominent citizen and he and Aphas Kent founded the Congregationalist Church in 1784. The church now attended by the Coolidges. The two families were very good friends."⁴
