Hon. Nathan Sargent was judge of the Court of Common Pleas, judge of probate, sergeant-at-arms of the United States House of Representatives, register-general of the United States Land Office, register of the Treasury, and commissioner of customs. He was known, also, as a political writer, under the nom-de-plume of 'Oliver Oldschool.'
During the closing years of his life he wrote a most entertaining and instructive work, entitled 'Public Men and Events,' giving an account of Washington political life 'From the commencement of Mr. Monroe's Administration in 1817 to the close of Mr. Fillmore's Administration in 1853.'.1
