Carol Atwood passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2008. This ended three weeks in a coma following a massive inter-cranial bleed. In Carol's immediate family she is survived by her husband Bill, their daughter Liz and son Stewart Armstrong. She is also survived by her sister Susan Ogle, her mother Elsa Edwards and her brother Paul Edwards.
Carol was born in New Jersey in 1946, but grew up in Palo Alto, CA. She attended Stanford Univ. and married her first husband, Jim Armstrong, while there. She graduated from Stanford in 1968 and then earned a law degree at Hastings in San Francisco. She was admitted to the California Bar in 1972. She practiced law with the IRS and legal aid, but finally decided that law was not her field. She was subsequently employed in numerous jobs, such as handy-person for Palo Alto's Senior Home Repair, grade school science teacher, and undergraduate advisor at UCSC in both the Physics Dept. and School of Engineering. After retiring from UCSC in 2006 she became a volunteer in the English-as-a-Second Language program in Santa Cruz. She and her husband Bill also made violins and violas in their shop in Bonny Doon.
There will be a Celebration of Carol's Life this coming Sunday, November 23, at the Atwood's home in Bonny Doon. Please do not send flowers or food. Instead it is Carol's wish to remember her through a donation in her name to the following charities:
