  • Clara was a nurse who founded the Red Cross. She was a teacher for 12 years from 1838. Later she went to Washington and was a clerk in the US Patent Office, one of the first women clerks in the federal government. When the Civil War started she was in Washington and wanted to provide assistance to the wounded - to do her patriotic duty. She subsequently became a nurse on the front lines of battle, known as the American Nightingale. After the War she ran the Office of Missing Soldiers. During a tour of Europe she was exposed to the Red Cross, and decided to start an American branch, the founding date which was 1881.1
