SILAS S. GREEN, 87, one of Peterborough's first rural mail carriers, died at the Monadnock Community Hospital Saturday following an operation. He was a Sharon native, but had resided in this town for nearly half a century. Mr. Green was first appointed to the RFD service on July 10, 1900, being assigned to the so-called Route 2 (in Sharon). In 1918 he was transferred to Route 4 in Peterborough, holding this position until his retirement on October 31, 1930. During his long postal career he served under four postmasters, George P. Dustan, Thomas D. Winch, Eugene M. Ware, and Harry F. Smith. At the time of his retirement he was tendered a reception. He had replaced Rev. George W. Patten, onetime Unitarian minister, as carrier when he first received his appointment. This was shortly after RFD had been established here.
Born in Sharon October 3, 1865, he was the son of Simeon and Sarah (Hadley) Green. Since his retirement he spent some time in Fitchburg, but in recent months had been living with two of his daughters, Mrs. Dean Clark of Granite street, and Mrs. Edward Shea of Concord street. He was staying with Mrs. Shea at the time he was taken ill.
His immediate survivors also include another daughter, Mrs. Horatio Beal of Cohasset, Mass.; four sons, Charles and Reade of Greenfield, Mass., Kenneth of Leominster, and Donald of Keene.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Jellison Funeral Home conducted by Rev. William A. Hudson of the Methodist Church. Bearers were all present or past postal employees, Postmaster Martin J. Keenan, George E. Tuttle, assistant postmaster, and William Ramsey and Edwin Trufant, retired RFD carriers. Burial was in the family lot in Pine Hill Cemetery.
